Area History
Founded in 1836, when the Republic of Texas was formed, the town was named for Thomas Jefferson. Texas' first steamboat port, Jefferson remains a living page of history.

A rich heritage draws thousands of visitors to Jefferson annually. Built on a strong preservation movement which began in Jefferson decades ago, current residents continue to work to save and restore the many historic buildings and sites all throughout the city and county. Historical markers on many homes are opened for tours on a daily basis, as is the Jefferson Historical Museum, now located in what was once a federal courthouse. But EVERYONE knows Jefferson best for the fabulous bed and breakfast Inns. Nearly 60 bed and breakfasts, Jefferson is the proclaimed  "The Bed & Breakfast Capital of East Texas," with its southern hospitality and friendly atmosphere.
